SMU’s Arcila Is C-USA Swimmer of the Year

IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Three SMU women’s swimmers have earned Conference USA Swimming and Diving Specialty awards. Sophomore Isabella Arcila garnered Conference USA Swimmer of the Year honors, Danielle Villars earned Freshmen Swimmer of the Year, and Nathalie Lindborg claimed Newcomer of the Year.

With Arcila winning the Swimmer of the Year award it makes this the fourth consecutive season a Mustang has won the league’s top award. The two-time All-American was named Swimmer of the Meet at the C-USA Championship and is a 10-time C-USA champion with six gold medal wins in 2013. She established a new conference record in the 50-free (22.33) during this year’s Championship meet and was part of a record-setting 200-free relay team (1:28.94). Arcila qualified for the 2013 NCAA Championship in five events: 50 free, 100 and 200 backstrokes, and the 200 and 400 free relays. She finished in 10th and 11th place, respectively, as a member of the 400 and 200 free relay teams.

Villars earned two titles during her first C-USA Swimming and Diving Championship, swimming legs for the triumphant 400 medley and 800 free relay teams. She was the runner-up in the 100 fly and placed third in the 200 fly at the league championship meet. She is the third straight Mustang to earn Freshman Swimmer of the Year honors and fourth winner in the past five seasons. She also was a part of 400 medley and 800 free relay teams at the NCAA Championship.

Lindborg is the second straight and third SMU swimmer to earn Newcomer of the Year honors. She won five titles at the C-USA Championship and was part of two NCAA-scoring relay teams. Lindborg was an individual C-USA champion in the 100 free and was part of the winning 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams as well as the champion 400 medley relay. She also earned a pair of runner-up finishes at the conference meet in the 50 and 200 free. Athletes who finished first in their respective events at the C-USA Swimming and Diving Championship were named first-team all-conference. Second-place finishers earned second-team all-conference honors and third-place finishers were named to the all-conference third team.
