Stars Extend Benn For 8 Years

Jamie Benn finalized an eight-year contract extension worth $76 million with the Dallas Stars on Friday night.

The 26-year-old left wing and Stars team captain will receive $9.5 million per year through the 2024-25 season.

“The Stars are the only organization I know and Dallas is home to me,” Benn said in a statement. “(The team has) made it clear that they are dedicated to winning, and winning the right way. I’m happy to commit to that process for eight more years.”

Benn is a four-time All-Star who has 192 goals and 256 assists for 448 points over 508 career games in seven seasons.

He is recovering from surgery to repair a core injury and is expected to be sidelined for the next six weeks. Benn’s availability to play for Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in September is up in the air.

He should be ready for the start of the NHL season.

Benn had surgery last offseason on both hips.

Last year, Benn scored a career-high 41 goals with 48 assists for 89 points, which was also a personal-best.

“Jamie has evolved into one of the most complete players in the NHL and his ability to lead our team is second-to-none,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “He impacts the game in so many ways and this signing was extremely important for the direction of the franchise.

Benn was selected by Dallas in the fifth round of the 2007 entry draft at No. 129 overall. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 3, 2009.

He ranks 10th on the Stars’ all-time goals list and is the only player in franchise history to win the Art Ross Trophy, which he won in 2014-15 when he led the NHL in points (87) after totaling 35 goals and 52 assists.
