TCU had five scorers in double figures, led by a game-high 19 points by guard Desmond Bane, to defeat Alabama State 98-62 in a nonconference game Monday night.
The other Horned Frogs (2-0) to score in double figures included guards Jaylen Fisher (13 points) and Brandon Parrish (10) and forwards JD Miller (17) and Karviar Shepherd (10). Fisher tallied eight assists as did reserve guard Alex Robinson.
Alabama State, 0-2 out of the Southwest Athletic Conference, was led by 18 points from forward Tony Armstrong (who also had eight rebounds) and 10 points from guard Rodney Simeon. They were the only Hornets in double-figure scoring.
The matchup was a campus game of the Global Sports Classic, which will be played in Las Vegas Dec. 21-22 on the UNLV campus. The Horned Frogs are part of the four-team field with UNLV, Western Kentucky and Washington.
Alabama State only led once — 2-1 with 18:51 left in the first half — before TCU of the Big 12 quickly pulled away. TCU went on a 13-2 run to build a 14-4 lead and later outscored the Hornets in another 13-2 stretch to lead 27-9 with 6:37 left before halftime.
By limiting Alabama State to only 15 first-half points, leading 47-15 at the half, TCU held the Hornets to the ninth-lowest total of any half for an opponent in the history of the program.
TCU, playing its first season under former Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon, shot 59 percent from the field in the game and tallied 29 assists.
Alabama State had as many turnovers (22) as field goals made (22). The Hornets shot 44.9 percent from the field, including 31.3 percent (5 of 16) from 3-point range
