TCU Falls At Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – Sophomore guard Kyan Anderson led TCU with 11 points and a career-high eight assists Saturday as Iowa State downed the Horned Frogs by an 87-53 count at Hilton Coliseum.
The setback dropped TCU’s season record to 10-15 overall and 1-11 in Big 12 play. ISU improved to 17-8 overall and 7-5 in the Big 12 while extending its home winning streak to 21 games, fifth-longest in the nation.
The Frogs ran up against a high-octane Iowa State squad that fired on all cylinders Saturday. The Cyclones shot 51.9 percent from the field overall, including 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from beyond the arc. The team’s 14 treys were the most made against the Frogs in more than three years. ISU also controlled the paint, recording a 41-27 rebounding edge on TCU.
TCU was unable to keep pace with the Cyclones, shooting only 38.2 percent from the floor, although the squad did match its season high with six 3’s. The Frogs also scored 10 points on the fastbreak, their second-best total of the year.
Anderson paced the Frogs with his team-best 13th double-figure scoring performance that included a pair of 3’s. His eight helpers matched a career best set on two previous occasions, both last season during his freshman campaign. Anderson also recorded three steals.
Joining Anderson in double digits for the fifth time in the last
seven games was senior forward Connell Crossland, who totaled 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Crossland entered the current stretch with only two performances of 10 or more points in his previous 50 career contests. Freshman Charles Hill Jr. added nine points Saturday, while senior forward Garlon Green totaled eight. Senior forward Adrick McKinney led TCU on the glass with six rebounds.
Four Cyclones reached double figures, including forward Georges Niang, who scored a game-high 19 points. Niang was one of three ISU players with at least three treys Saturday. Guards Will Clyburn (16 points), Tyrus McGee (15) and Chris Babb (11) joined Niang atop the Cyclones scoring column. McGee drilled four 3-pointers.
TCU trailed by just three points late in the first half before ISU took control of the contest. The Cyclones finished the stanza of on a 12-0 run, recording 3-point plays on four out of five possessions in one stretch to put the Frogs in a 36-21 hole at intermission. TCU was held scoreless for the final 4:27 of the half.
The Frogs were able to cut their deficit back to nine points early in the second half with the help of a pair of Green 3-pointers, but ISU responded with long daggers of its own. Clyburn hit 3’s on back-to-back possessions to lead an 8-0 Cyclone run.
Iowa State put the contest out of reach late, outscoring TCU by a 23-7 margin in the game’s final 8:30.
ISU got off to a fast start against the Frogs, moving in front by nine points just over five minutes into the game and 12 midway through the first half. Anderson brought TCU back, fueling a 10-0 Frog run with a pair of long jumpers. Hill finished off the spurt by draining his first 3 with just under six minutes remaining to cut the Cyclone lead to 3, 22-19.
TCU returns home for a Tuesday night matchup with Texas at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum at 7 p.m. The contest will be televised live by the Big 12 Network.
