TCU Junior Earns Spot On US Olympic Team

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — TCU Rifle junior Sarah Scherer was awarded a spot on the U.S. Olympic team with a second-place finish in the Women’s Air Rifle portion of the 2012 USA Olympic Shooting Trials.

The Fort Worth native needed to reach the top two to earn a bid. Combined with her scores from the first round (399 and 398), Scherer fired a pair of 395’s and a 104.0 in the final to edge out Emily Caruso (1688-1687). Jamie Gray took home first-place honors with an overall 1689.5.

Sarah Beard had a solid showing as well, coming in at eighth (1668.1). Catherine Green, Claudia Duksa, Caitlin Morrissey, and Mattie Brogdon also competed in the event.

The Horned Frogs (12-0) return to action March 9-10 in Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Rifle Championships hosted by Ohio State. The first day will feature smallbore with the second being air rifle.
