LONDON, England – Making her first ever appearance in the Olympic Games, TCU rifle’s Sarah Scherer finished seventh in Women’s 10m Air Rifle, shot at the Royal Artillary Barracks. There were 56 total shooters in the event, which handed out the Olympics first medal Saturday morning.

In the qualification round, Scherer shot a 397 with 32 center shots. She was just two points behind the leader, Poland’s Sylwia Bogacka, who fired a 399 with 37 center shots. Scherer’s mark of 397 lumped her in with five others and forced a shoot off for the final four spots in the finals. In the shoot off, she shot a 51.2 to earn a spot in the finals.

Scherer shot an even 102 in the finals, firing 10’s on all but one shot. Combined with her 397 in the qualification round, Scherer completed her Olympic event with a score of 499.0. It wasn’t enough to erase the deficit from the qualification round as China’s Siling Yi fired a 103.9 to claim gold, finishing the event with a total score of 502.9. Bogacka (502.2) took home the silver medal, while China’s Dan Yu (501.5) won bronze. Scherer’s US teammate, Jamie Gray, finished fifth.
