TCU Soccer Loses To Nevada

FORT WORTH – The TCU Horned Frogs dropped a nail-biter to Nevada Sunday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Nevada scored in the 67th minute and withstood a furious attack by the Frogs to steal the victory.

“I thought we played well enough to win, but the scoreboard doesn’t show it,” said head coach Eric Bell. “Soccer is an interesting game. You can dominate and still lose. We had the majority of the possession, but we just weren’t dangerous enough. We didn’t create enough scoring chances.”

A defensive battle was the story of the first half as both teams had a hard time breaking through the opponent’s backline. The Horned Frogs had the better of the scoring opportunities in the half, but were foiled on both attempts.

In the 15th minute, Kristen Barg made a good feed to Maddy Courvoisier streaking down the sideline. She beat her defender in the goal box, but before she could get the shot off, Wolfpack goalkeeper Dana Moreno came out to steal the ball. Twenty minutes later, Ashley Jones found a streaking Madeline Hamm who put a strong shot on goal that was knocked away from danger by a diving Moreno.

TCU continued to dominate the match, maintaining possession of the ball in the early stages of the second half. The Frogs earned an early corner kick and Makenzie Koch’s feed to the goal box was right on target, but Hamm’s header was corralled by Moreno to keep the match scoreless.

Nevada made its first real chance on goal count as it found the back of the net in the 67th minute. After a corner kick, the Wolfpack kept possession and the ball eventually worked its way onto the foot of Lauren Braman. She blasted a shot from 25 yards out that was deflected in by Chrisalyn Fonte for a 1-0 lead.

The Frogs didn’t go quietly as they kept constant pressure on the Wolfpack defense. A Nevada player hauled down a Frog just outside the penalty box setting up a direct kick. Brittany Slyman blasted a shot that banged hard off the crossbar and bounced out of danger.

More pressure came from the Frogs as they worked hard to earn another corner kick with five minutes to go. Koch’s cross once again was on target, but Kelly Johnson’s header was blocked. A follow up shot off the foot of Rebekah Foreman was hauled in by Moreno and the Wolfpack held on for the win.

TCU falls to 2-2-1 on the season. The Frogs continue their four-match homestand Friday, Sept. 7 when they host crosstown rival, SMU. Match time at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
