TCU Volleyball Wins Saturday Doubleheader

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The TCU women’s volleyball won the nightcap of its doubleheader Saturday, picking up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) decision over Belmont inside the Curb Event Center.

The Horned Frogs improved to 2-1 on the year after winning both ends of their Saturday doubleheader. The Bruins, hosts of the Belmont Invitational, fell to 1-2. TCU ran its tournament record to 69-12 over the past eight seasons.

In a first set defined by runs, it was TCU’s 4-1 spurt at the end that clinched a 25-21 set win and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Frogs spread around the offense in the set with Sloane Sunstrum, Mattie Burleson, Yvonne Igodan and Stephanie Holland each notching three kills helping the Frogs to a .324 attack percentage.

TCU appeared in control of the first set midway through until a 6-1 Belmont run shortened the Frog lead to 17-16. The Frogs responded with a 3-0 run of their own to prompt a Bruin timeout. Megan Munce assisted on nine of the 13 TCU kills in the set.

The Frogs carried the surge at the end of the first set into the second as they opened

it on an 8-2 run. Igodan took over in the middle in the set, tallying seven kills on eight attacks. Holland added another three kills in the second and Horio continued her work on the ground with five digs as TCU rolled to a 25-13 win.

Munce’s two aces in the third set, inching her closer to No. 1 all-time at TCU in the category, highlighted the play as the Frogs polished off a 25-14 third set for the 3-0 sweep.

Igodan, a junior from Houston, had a .556 attack percentage in the match with 11 kills and one error on 18 total attacks. She and Munce were named to the Belmont Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Overall, TCU outhit the Bruins .319 to .070 and held the advantage in kills, 36-31. TCU had 11 blocks to Belmont’s two and 33 assists, 27 of them coming from Munce.

TCU returns to action for its home opener Aug. 31 against crosstown rival SMU as part of the TCU Nike Invitational. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
