LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Brett Johnson’s looping single over the drawn-in infield capped a wild ninth inning and gave TCU a 16-15 win over San Diego State in the opening game of the MW Tournament. The Aztecs rallied with 11 runs in the ninth to take the lead before the Horned Frogs scored two in the bottom for the win.

The Aztecs erased a 14-4 lead in the top of the ninth as they sent 17 men to the plate and scored 11 times to take a 15-14 lead. A Tim Zier single capped the Aztecs comeback as he hit a bases-loaded single to right to give San Diego State the lead.

After intentionally walking Chris Wilson, who had hit a three-run homer earlier in the inning, Stefan Crichton (8-2) retired the next two batters he faced to keep it a one-run deficit.

With one swing of the bat, Kyle Von Tungeln erased the deficit as he launched an 0-2 offering from Aztec closer Justin Hepner (4-3) over the right field fence to tie the game at 15. Davy Wright followed with a single and moved to third on a pinch-hit double off the bat of Josh Gonzales. After an intentional walk to Jantzen Witte, Johnson looped the

game-winning single over the drawn-in infield for a 16-15 win.

The Aztecs took an early 1-0 lead in the first, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Greg Allen. Ryan Muno put the Aztecs in front with a two-out base hit.

TCU rallied in the second, taking a 3-1 lead on four hits. Odell tied the game with a base hit. With runners on the corners, Aztec starter Cole Swanson balked in the go-ahead run. Keaton Jones lined a single to right field to drive in Odell.

The see-saw contest continued as the Aztecs regained the lead, 4-3, on bases-loaded triple off the bat of Jomel Torres.

A three-run blast off the bat of Kevin Cron in the fifth inning put the Frogs back in front, 6-4. The home run started an offensive outburst as TCU scored 11 unanswered runs over the course of the next three innings to take a 14-4 lead.

Jerrick Suiter singled to open the sixth inning and scored on a triple off the bat of Odell. After a walk put runners on the corners, the Aztecs committed a costly two-run error that gave TCU a 9-4 lead.

TCU padded its lead with a five-run seventh inning that saw 10 men come to the plate. All five runs came with two outs. After Rivera singled in the first run of the inning, the Aztecs second error of the game opened the floodgates. Josh Elander drew a bases loaded walk and Cron hit a two-run double to right for an 11-4 lead. A scoreless eighth inning set up the wild ninth inning.

With the win, TCU improves to 36-17 overall. The Frogs advance in the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of the New Mexico-UNLV contest Friday night at 9 p.m.
