TCU Women Open Season With Win

FORT WORTH, Texas – Zahna Medley led four Horned Frogs in double figures with 22 points as the TCU women’s basketball team posted an 87-64 season-opening victory over Houston Baptist Friday night at the University Recreation Center.

Junior guard Alexia Standish added 12 points in her TCU debut, while senior guard Donielle Breaux registered 11 points and led the squad with seven rebounds and six assists and senior guard Chelsea Prince tallied her second-career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).

The Frogs (1-0) trailed the Southland Conference Huskies by seven points less than two minutes into the game before Breaux and Standish each tallied five points to whittle the lead to one at 13-12 with 16:14 left in the first half.

Sophomore forward Jada Butts, who finished with eight points in the game, eventually gave the Frogs their first lead since the opening bucket of the game.

By the time the dust cleared the Frogs strung together a 19-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the game well out of reach.

TCU led by more than 20 for the first time in the game when a bucket by Breaux took the lead to 21 at 39-18 with 5:02 left in the half, and then a 3-pointer by Standish just before the half increased the lead to 26 at 54-28 heading into the break.

Medley led all scorers with 17 first-half points, while Standish had 12 and Prince had nine.

The Frogs shot 52 percent from the field, including 47 percent from the 3-point line, in the opening 20 minutes, while defensively, TCU held the Huskies to 32 percent shooting from the field, including just 25 percent from the 3-point line.

TCU opened the second half on an 8-0 run to lead by a game-high 34 points with 17:49 left in the contest.

For the game, the Frogs shot 41 percent from the field, including 35 from the 3-point line. Medley connected on 7-of-12 shots, including 4-of-6 from distance.

TCU tallied 15 steals and forced 22 HBU miscues.

Shanice Steenholdt led HBU with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds.

The Frogs return to action with their road opener at Georgia at noon on Sunday.
