UNT Women Lose At South Alabama

MOBILE, Alabama – The North Texas women’s basketball team faced a stingy South Alabama defense as the Jaguars handed the Mean Green (9-7, 2-1) its first loss of the Sun Belt season with a 69-60 win at the Mitchell Center.

Despite 17 points from Ash’Lynne Evans, South Alabama (8-6, 1-1) never trailed in the game as they led North Texas wire-to-wire for their first conference win of the season.

The Jaguars raced out to an early 8-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game powered by back-to-back 3-pointers from Sarda Peterson. South Alabama extended its lead to nine points at 17-8 midway through the first half. North Texas cut the led to five at 19-14 after a basket by Evans, but South Alabama pushed its lead back to 10-points at the break, leading 32-22.

North Texas was held to just 26 percent shooting in the first half. The second half saw the Mean Green cut the Jaguars led to six on two different occasions, but South Alabama didn’t let North Texas get any closer than that in the second half.

Leading 62-56 with 1:43 remaining, the Jaguars connected on five straight free throws to ice the game. Jasmine Godbolt, playing in her first game since Missouri State, scored 12 points in 16 minutes of action. The 17 points score by Evans is the third straight game of 17 points or more for Evans.

North Texas is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Arkansas State. Tip time at the Convocation Center is set for 3:05 p.m.
