SMU M-Tennis Defeats UNLV, Falls To Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, downing UNLV 4-3 Saturday and falling to Arkansas 5-2 on Sunday.

The Mustangs played a hard fought match against UNLV, splitting the singles event 3-3. No. 29 Artem Baradach continued his strong play by disposing Mehdi Bouras 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Mischa Nowicki turned in another dominating performance, defeating Bernard Schoeman 6-3, 6-1. Adham el-Effendi took a third win for the Mustangs in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, over Tamas Batyi.

SMU then took two of the three doubles competitions to win the match. The duo of Joseph Hattrup and Toby Flood beat Johannes Markel and Tamas Batyi 8-5, while David Costa and Nowicki teamed up to defeat Rene Ruegamer and Alex Bull 8-6.

Sunday against Arkansas, newcomer Gaston Cuadranti was first off the court as he defeated Mike Ward 6-2, 6-0. Baradach followed shortly after, with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Chris Nott. However, the Razorbacks came charging back winning the final four singles matches.

Arkansas then swept doubles to earn the final point. Matt Walters and Matt Hogan were first to finish, downing Baradach and el-Effendi 8-3. The No. 56 pairing of Mike Ward and Nikolas Zogaj defeated Costa and Nowicki to lock up the doubles win.

SMU hosts Lamar Sunday at noon at Turpin Tennis Center.
