TCU Women Fall To Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite three players scoring in double-figures Sunday and TCU going 22-of-22 from the charity stripe, the Horned Frogs dropped a 91-80 setback to Texas State at Strahan Coliseum.
On the day, TCU, now 1-2 on the year, set a new school record by going 22-of-22 from the line, but couldn’t overcome some timely three’s by the Bobcats throughout the contest. When it was all said and done, TCU hit the 80-point barrier, which only happened once a year ago, but it wasn’t enough. In all, the Frog broke the previous mark of 18-of-19 (.947) from the line, which was set against Utah in 2007.
TCU, who outscored Texas State (3-1) off the bench 31-14, totaled 52 boards, which were the most since grabbing 56 against UTA in 2010.
Freshman Zahna Medley scored a new season-high 19 points Sunday on 6-of-17 from the floor, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the line. Sophomore Natalie Ventress was also in double-figures with 19 points, while grabbing seven boards. Finally, freshman Kamy Cole rounded out the Horned Frogs top-scorers with 15 points. For a second-straight game, Latricia Lovings grabbed 10 boards, while chipping in with four blocks and six points from the field.
Texas State was paced by Ashley Ezeh and Diamond Ford, who totaled 26 and 23 points apiece
, respectively. Ezeh finished with 26 points, while also grabbing 11 boards.
Following intermission, Ventress went right to work, scoring a runner plus the foul to make the scoreboard read 43-40. Texas State then went on a 15-2 run to push the score to 58-42 with 15:15 showing on the clock.
The Frogs continued to battle though as Lovings hustled down a loose ball and found Medley who promptly kicked it back to the junior for the two-handed layup with a little over 14 minutes remaining in the second frame, to pull TCU within 14.
With the scoreboard reading 61-44, the Frogs went to work as Ventress connected on four of the next six, including a runner from the corner halfway through. The Frogs pulled within 63-50 following a jumper from Cole, which seemed to ignite the Brock native. She would go on to score five-consecutive points, which included a deep trey, to pull TCU within 11 at 66-55.
Following some free throws by Texas State, the Frogs found Lovings down low to inch their way closer halfway through the second period. Relentless defense the next trip down the court helped Whitney Williams swipe the rock and go coast to coast, but just like they did all day, the Bobcats answered with another triple to make the score 73-59.
Down by 16, Lovings swatted away another Bobcat defender and Medley went the length of the court to make the score 75-62 on a tough three-point play. Texas State would once again answer with another triple, but Ventress dialed it up from deep with a little over 6 minutes remaining and the Frogs pulled within 13.
A back and fourth game early was slowed when Ventress tickled the twine from deep two minutes into the contest. Texas State proceeded to go on a 11-2 run before Medley split two Bobcat defenders and found Lovings down low to halt the Texas State attack at the 15:38 mark of the opening frame.
With the scoreboard reading 18-7 in favor of Texas State, Williams calmly drilled three-straight at the charity stripe to pull the Frogs closer at 18-10. The Bobcats would push it to 22-10, but Williams found Chelsea Prince with one second left on the shot clock off a lob and the Frogs appeared to be in business, pulling within 10.
The Purple and White would go on a 10-4 run midway through the opening period to inch the Frogs closer at 26-20. During that time, Cole connected on a tough old fashion three-point play and Medley went to work from the corner, drilling a triple with 7:09 showing on the clock.
The freshman then stole the rock and went coast to coast to pull TCU within 28-24 a few moments later. The Illinois native would continue to carry the Frogs down the stretch, scoring a beautiful trey ball with 4:14 showing on the board. By the time fellow freshman Veja Hamilton got into the act, the Frogs were only down two at 33-31.
Medley simply took over from there, tying the game at 33-33, scoring two of her 12 first half points. After a triple from Ford, Williams found a cutting Ventress down the stretch to give TCU its first lead of the second half at 37-36. It was short lived though as Texas State was able to bounce back with four-straight to make the score at the break 41-37 in favor of the Bobcats.
TCU will next be in action at home Wednesday when it takes on SMU at 7:00 p.m. CT from Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
