LUBBOCK, Texas – Shooting woes plagued the TCU women’s basketball team in a 52-37 loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Conference opener on Sunday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena.

The Horned Frogs saw their four-game win streak snapped to drop to 8-4 overall, while the Red Raiders improved to 11-2 on the season.

TCU’s cold shooting spoiled a defensive effort that saw the Horned Frogs limit Texas Tech to just 52 points, marking its third-lowest scoring output of the season.

Junior guard Veja Hamilton reached double figures for the third time in four games to lead TCU with 10 points, while senior forward Chelsea Prince just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Senior guard Donielle Breaux matched Prince’s team-high rebounds with eight, while junior forward Caitlin Diaz added seven boards to go with two steals in 14 minutes.

The Horned Frogs struggled offensively from the onset, as Hamilton knocked down TCU’s first bucket nearly eight minutes in for an early 8-2 deficit.

Prince sparked a brief flurry for TCU with under two minutes remaining in the opening half when she blocked a 3-point attempt and converted a layup in a fastbreak on the other end.

Junior guard Zahna Medley would follow with a dish to Hamilton for a

baseline jumper to trim the once 11-point deficit down to six with 31.0 seconds left, but Texas Tech’s Ivonne CookTaylor sank a jumper with just 5.0 seconds remaining for a halftime lead of 21-13 over TCU.

With TCU trailing by 13 points midway through the second half, Medley connected on her first 3-pointer of the contest to trim the deficit back to 10, but the Red Raiders would quickly take an 18-point lead on a 8-0 run fueled by a pair of 3-pointers.

TCU shot just 27 percent (14-of-52) from the field and connected on only three buckets from long distance on 15 attempts.

The Horned Frogs pulled even with the Red Raiders in the rebounding battle with 36 boards apiece, while turning the ball over 20 times compared to 16 Texas Tech miscues.

TCU will play host to Iowa State in its Big 12 home opener at 7 p.m., on Wednesday at the University Recreation Center. Walk-up tickets will be available at the Recreation Center ticket window on game day.
