Sharapova Named AAC Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Sophomore Dasha Sharapova has been named the American Athletic Conference’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday.

Sharapova helped the Mustangs to two wins on their road trip to Hawaii, going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles. In SMU’s 6-1 upset over No. 64 Hawaii, she earned a come-from-behind, three-set victory over Martina Kostalova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Gomel, Belarus, native then defeated Danielle Pham, 6-2, 6-1, to help SMU top Cal State Fullerton, 5-2. Sharapova’s season singles record now stands at 18-7.

In doubles, Sharapova and teammate Vaszilisza Bulgakova improved to 15-6 with two victories and helped the Mustangs win the doubles point in both matches.

After the two wins in Honolulu, SMU is now ranked 74th in the latest ITA rankings.
