Former Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe Avezzano died Thursday in Italy of a heart attack.  Best known as the beloved “Coach Joe” who was with the Cowboys from 1990-2002, Avezzano was coaching the Seamen Milano of the Italian Football League at the time of his passing.

Avezzano won 3 Special Teams Coach of the Year honors during his stint with the Cowboys, which included 3 Super Bowl victories.

“Joe Avezzano was a very special part of our Dallas Cowboys family and our organization’s history,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a statement released by the team.  “He was also a wonderful father, husband and friend.  No one enjoyed life more than Joe, and no one that I know had a greater appreciation for the people that he loved and the lives that he touched.”

In addition to his tenure as a special teams coach for the Cowboys, Avezzano also spent time coaching the Oakland Raiders in the NFL, the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League, Oregon State, Florida State, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
