Dustin Johnson wins TOUR Championship, FedEx Cup
|Dustin Johnson held off rallies by Xander Schaffele and Justin Thomas to win the TOUR Championship and capture his first FedEx Cup title.
“It’s definitely very satisfying to be the FedExCup champion,” Johnson said, who pockets $15 million for winning the FedEx Cup. “Obviously coming in here I was in first with a two-shot lead, and I needed all those strokes that I could get. It’s a tough golf course, but I feel like I played pretty solid all week.”
Johnson began the week at 10-under par by virtue of sitting atop the FedEx Cup standings after winning the Northern Trust and a runner-up finish at the BMW Championship.
Johnson became the first No. 1 seed at the Tour Championship to win the FedEx Cup since Tiger Woods in 2009.
Next up for the No. 1 player in the world will be the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in two weeks.
“I wanted to be a FedExCup champion. That was something that in my career I would like to be, and obviously today I got the FedExCup,” Johnson said. “Got a few days off and then the U.S. Open, so not really much of a break.”
Thomas finished in a tie with Xander Schauffele for second, three shots behind Johnson.
“It sucks because I didn’t win. I lost in ’17 and I lost in 2020. They go under the same thing as a second in the column,” Thomas said. “You’re obviously playing for a lot of money, but I’m here to try to win the tournament and came up just a little short.”
Thomas pocketed $4.5 million and will also play next at the U.S. Open.
“Winged Foot is awesome. It’s one of my favorite courses I feel like I’ve ever played. When I went and checked it out, it’s right in front of you. It’s not tricked up. You know, it’s in our own hands,” Thomas said. “You just need to go there and try to play well. You need to drive the ball well and have control of the ball to try and shoot a good score out there.”
Jon Rahm came in to the week as the second seed came in fourth place at 17-under.
Next up on the PGA TOUR is the Safeway Open. Notables in the field include Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia. Shane Lowry and Brandt Snedeker.
