FC Dallas Defeat San Jose

Maximiliano Urruti rose high and used a bicycle kick to score the game’s only goal in the 51st minute as FC Dallas defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Friday to solidify its spot atop MLS’ Western Conference table.

Urruti’s goal, his fourth of the season, was the first for either team in the two sides’ three matches in the two years since San Jose moved to Avaya Stadium for its home pitch. The first two matches this season between FC Dallas and San Jose ended in draws (2-2 in Frisco on FC Dallas’ home pitch on April 9 and 0-0 in San Jose on May 28.

FC Dallas (11-5-4) won for its third consecutive MLS match and has forged a 6-1-2 record in the nine outings since losing three straight contests in late April and early May. FC Dallas has outscored its opponents 7-0 in its three-match victory streak and has gone more than 290 minutes since allowing a goal.

San Jose (5-6-7) lost for the first time at home this season and is mired in a seven-match winless streak that’s seen them drop to eighth in the 10-team Western Conference.

The Earthquakes outshot FC Dallas 12-7, but only six of San Jose’s shot were on goal.

San Jose had more dangerous opportunities to score and was the aggressor in the first half, which ended scoreless. The Earthquakes outshot FC Dallas 6-2 in the first 45 minutes, and out-possessed FC Dallas 51-49 percent. Each team had two corner kicks.

The Earthquakes’ Anibal Godoy hit the crossbar with a left-footed shot from outside the box on a direct free kick in the 36th minute was the best scoring chance for either team.
