Frisco Loses In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Frisco RoughRiders ended their historic scoreless drought but lost their fifth straight ballgame in a 4-1 defeat against the San Antonio Missions on Friday night at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. The ‘Riders are now in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season.

Frisco (13-22, 52-53) got the leadoff man aboard to open the ballgame, as Missions starter Matt Wisler plunked Ryan Strausborger. He was caught stealing, however, and the ‘Riders went quietly in the first.

The Missions (21-14, 59-45) struck first, and it came in first. Rico Noel led off the bottom-half of the inning with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and then stole third. Tommy Medica sent a fly ball out to center field, deep enough to score Noel on a sacrifice fly for the game’s first run. It was the first of three runs Noel scored on the night.

The ‘Riders offense picked up singles in the second and third innings, but Wisler kept them off the scoreboard, extending the ‘Riders’ scoreless streak to a franchise-long 38 innings.

With an infield single, Noel led off the third with as a Missions baserunner. He got to second base on a wild pitch and slid down to third on a single from Reymond Fuetnes. For the second time on the night, Medica knocked him home without a base hit. A fielder’s choice made it a 2-0 Missions lead.

In the top of the fourth, the ‘Riders finally got off the schneid. Brett Nicholas sent a charge to left field, leading off the inning with a double. After a pop out, Chih-Hsien Chiang singled him over to third base. Next up was Teodoro Martinez, who put a ball on the ground towards first base, but Medica fielded and fired home and the Missions tagged out Nicholas to keep Frisco from scoring.

With two outs, it was left to Odubel Herrera, who came through with a base hit up

the middle to bring home Chiang, scoring the first RoughRiders run since Monday night.

Jeudy Valdez retook the two-run lead for the Missions with a solo blast off Frisco starter Kevin Pucetas in the fourth to make it 3-1. Rico Noel scored one more time, and it came in the fifth. After he doubled to lead off the inning, Fuentes brought him home to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Neither offense scored again, and the Missions won it 4-1. Pucetas (10-8) took the loss, and Wisler (5-4) earned the victory. Jeremy McBryde, who worked a perfect ninth with a strikeout collected his fifth save of the season.

Game three of the four-game set between the RoughRiders and Missions begins at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday evening in San Antonio. Arlett Mavare (1-2, 5.31 ERA) gets the ball for the RoughRiders.
