Frisco Topples San Antonio

FRISCO, TEXAS – With two three-run frames, the Frisco RoughRiders toppled the San Antonio Missions 7-2 Thursday at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Three of the newest ‘Riders, Rougned Odor, Luis Sardinas and Francisco Mendoza, made their Double-A debuts.

The RoughRiders (17-24, 56-55) took control early in the first. Brett Nicholas reached first on a fielder’s choice. A single by Joe Benson and a throwing error by Jeudy Valdez brought Nicholas to third. Chih-Hsien Chiang knocked the run in on a ground rule double, and then later in the frame, an error by second baseman Cory Spangenberg brought home two more runs, as the ‘Riders went up 3-0.

In the third, Spangenberg doubled to right, and Rico Noel walked. Reymond Fuentes slammed a double to right-center to bring in the Missions (24-17, 62-48) first run. Later in the frame, Tommy Medica hit a sac fly to right, cutting the Frisco lead 3-2.

In his Double-A debut, Rougned Odor went three-for-five and led off the fifth with a triple to the left wall. Nicholas then reached base on an RBI fielder’s choice to bring

home the run. The ‘Riders offense exploded again in the eighth, scoring three more runs to extend the lead 7-2.

Promoted from High-A Myrtle Beach on Thursday, Jon Edwards and Francisco Mendoza appeared in relief, combining for five strikeouts and just three hits.

Arlett Mavare (2-2) allowed just two runs off five hits, striking four batters out in five innings to earn the victory, while Donn Roach (6-10) allowed four runs off seven hits in five innings with four strikeouts to suffer the loss.

The ‘Riders continue their series with the Missions Friday at Dr Pepper Ballpark at 7:05. Tyler Tufts (3-3, 3.24 ERA) will make the start for the RoughRiders against Missions right hander Matt Wisler (5-4, 3.43 ERA).
