CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The Frisco RoughRiders earned a series split against the Corpus Christi Hooks with a 4-3 win in 11 innings on Saturday night at Whataburger Field. For the third time in the four-game series, the ‘Riders and Hooks played an extra-innings contest and for the second time, Frisco claimed the victory.

Lost in the ending of the ballgame was a tremendous pitchers’ duel over the first six frames. Neither Frisco’s Tyler Tufts nor Corpus Christi’s David Martinez allowed a run while they were in the ballgame. Tufts tied a career-high with six innings pitched; he allowed four hits and a walk and fanned three. Martinez threw seven scoreless innings, but ultimately allowed two runs in 7.1 innings with six hits, three walks and two strikeouts because Pat Urkfitz allowed his two inherited runners to score.

To open the scoring, the Hooks (11-11, 53-39) plated two runs on a double by Drew Muren in the seventh off of the first Frisco reliever used, Jimmy Reyes, to take a 2-0 lead.

In the eighth inning, Frisco (9-13, 48-44) finally got to Martinez. Odubel Herrera led off with a single. Martinez retired Alejandro Selen on a fly ball to center field, but his night ended when Teodoro Martinez notched the second base hit of the inning.

Urkfitz blew the shutout on the first batter he faced, as

Greg Miclat singled home Herrera to cut the deficit to 2-1. Brett Nicholas then tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Tomas Telis gave the ‘Riders their first lead of the night with a two-out double.

With the score 3-2 Frisco, Kyle McClellan came on to try and keep the ‘Riders ahead. The former big leaguer allowed a solo shot with one down to Jonathan Meyer, which tied the game at 3-3, and for the third time in the series, the two teams played into extra innings.

McClellan settled in and pitched scoreless innings in the ninth and tenth, and the ‘Riders finally scratched a run in the top of the 11th. It came against Jorge De Leon who was pitching in his second inning of the night and throwing for the third consecutive day. Frisco hadn’t scored against him in the series, but Nicholas led off the frame with a walk. Telis moved him over on a sacrifice bunt, and then Alex Bucholz drove him home with a run-scoring double to make it 4-3 RoughRiders.

The run was enough for Richard Bleier who pitched a hitless and scoreless bottom of the inning for his third save. McClellan (1-0), despite the blown save, earned his first win. De Leon (0-3) took the loss.

The ‘Riders return home on Sunday, July 13 at 6:05 p.m. to host the San Antonio Missions for the first of four games at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Nick McBride (1-5, 5.84 ERA) makes the start for the ‘Riders and will oppose the Missions’ Keyvius Sampson (6-4, 2.90 ERA).
