Granbury Swimmer Wins Gold

U.S. swimmer Dana Vollmer, from Granbury, went from not qualifying for the Olympics 4 years ago to winning a gold medal on Sunday.  Vollmer set a world record in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 55.98 seconds.

Vollmer also won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics as part of the U.S. freestyle relay team.

Injuries and health problems led to Vollmer failing to make the Olympic team in 2008, and raised speculation whether she would continue in the sport.

Fortunately for the USA, a new outlook and desire led Vollmer to even greater heights.

On Sunday, Vollmer rallied from third place at the 50 meter turn to shatter the world record and take the gold.  Ying Lu, of China, finished 2nd, .89 seconds behind.  Australia’s Alicia Coutts finished 3rd for the bronze medal.
