High Schoolers Earn Spot In LPGA Shootout

IRVING, TEXAS, April 22, 2013 – Haley Mills of Fort Worth and Taylor Coleman of San Antonio earned spots in the North Texas LPGA Shootout via the High School Shootout, held today at Las Colinas Country Club.
Mills shot 1-under-par 70 to win the High School Shootout, while Coleman fired a 1-over-par 72 to finish second. The pair will tee it up alongside 140 of the world’s best professional golfers when the North Texas LPGA Shootout begins on Thursday. Coverage of the tournament will air Thursday through Sunday on Golf Channel.
“I feel so honored to even have the chance to qualify for an LPGA event, it’s just awesome,” said Mills. “I didn’t think I would shoot 1-under. I was relaxed, but I got nervous the last four holes.”
Mills made birdie on the final two holes to break par in her first-ever Tour qualifier. The 18-year-old attends the Jim McLean Junior Academy in Fort Worth. She lists Michelle Wie as her favorite LPGA player.
“It is super cool and I am so excited to qualify,” Coleman said. “I thought I played pretty solid, kept it pretty steady and made my putts.”
Coleman is a 16-year-old sophomore at Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas. She lists her favorite LPGA player as Paula Creamer.
“After I finish college, I want to turn professional so I’m excited to play this week,” said Coleman.
LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan, tournament director Rob Neal and Nexus Club representative Kathy Wilkins were on hand to congratulate the qualifiers today.
Mills and Coleman will be joined this week by Collegiate Shootout qualifiers Madison Pressel, sister of LPGA star Morgan Pressel, and Casey Grice, in the 144-player field this week. Pressel, a member of the University of Texas women’s golf team, and Grice, a member of the University of North Carolina golf women’s golf team, each shot even-par 71 in the Collegiate Shootout, held on March 12.
The final two spots in this week’s field will be filled in the professional qualifier, held this afternoon at Las Colinas Country Club.
