Luka Dončić Named All-NBA First Team

The NBA announced today that Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić has been named to the 2022-23 Kia All-NBA First Team, marking the fourth straight year he has garnered All-NBA First Team honors.

He is now tied with 2023 Hall of Fame inductee Dirk Nowitzki for the most All-NBA First Team selections in franchise history.

The 24-year-old joins Kevin Durant, Tim Duncan and Max Zaslofsky as the only players to garner four All-NBA First Team accolades before their 25th birthday. Dončić also joins Larry Bird, George Gervin and Duncan as the only players to earn four-or-more All-NBA First Team selections within their first five seasons since the ABA/NBA merger (1976-77).

Dončić averaged a career-high (team-high) 32.4 points, a team-high 8.6 rebounds, a team-high 8.0 assists, a career-high (team-high) 1.4 steals and a career-high 36.2 minutes in 66 games (all starts) in 2022-23. He joined Michael Jordan (32.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 8.0 apg in 1988-89) as the only players in NBA history to average at least 32.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists for a season.

The fifth-year guard made his fourth All-Star appearance at age 23, joining Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Isiah Thomas and Anthony Davis as the only players to earn four All-Star nods before their 24th birthday. Dončić also made his third career All-Star start, breaking a tie with Nowitzki for the most All-Star starts in franchise history.

Dončić (32.4 ppg) ranked second in the NBA in scoring behind the 2022-23 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid (33.5 ppg). He broke Mark Aguirre’s franchise record (29.5 ppg in 1983-84; 2nd in NBA) for the highest single-season scoring average while joining Aguirre as the only Mavericks to finish as high as second in the league in scoring. Dončić racked up 2,138 points on the year, marking the third-highest single-season total in team history (Aguirre, 2,330, 1983-84; Nowitzki, 2,151, 2005-06) while joining Nowitzki (5 times) and Aguirre (3 times) as the only Mavericks to produce a 2,000-point campaign.

The 6-7 Slovenian recorded an NBA-best four 50-point efforts and Dallas went a perfect 4-0 in those games. He now has five career 50-point performances, more than the rest of the Mavericks franchise combined (4). Dončić also set a new single-season franchise record for the most 40-point games (14) and 30-point outings (44). He scored 30-plus points in each of the team’s first nine games, the second-longest 30-point streak to begin a season in NBA history (Wilt Chamberlain, 23 games, 1962-63).

Dončić registered 10 triple-doubles (Dallas went 9-1 in those games), including an NBA-best four 40-point triple-doubles and the league’s first ever 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double (60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists vs. New York on Dec. 27). The 2018-19 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year joined Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to record eight-or-more triple-doubles in each of their first five seasons. Dončić also finished with at least 10 triple-doubles for the fourth consecutive year (17 in 2019-20, 11 in 2020-21, 10 in 2021-22).

The former EuroLeague MVP also produced a career-high (league-high) 53 20-point, five-rebound, five-assist games, his fourth straight season recording 49-or-more 20-5-5 efforts (50 in 2019-20, 49 in 2020-21, 49 in 2021-22).

For his career, Dončić is averaging 27.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 34.3 minutes in 330 games (all starts). He holds the third-highest career scoring average in NBA history (min. 100 games) behind Jordan (30.1 ppg) and Chamberlain (30.1 ppg). He also ranks 10th in NBA history in career triple-doubles (56).
