Rangers extend contract for Daniels
The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has agreed to terms with General Manager Jon Daniels on a four-year contract extension through the 2015 season. No further terms were disclosed.
Daniels had been under contract through 2011 after agreeing to a two-year extension prior to the 2008 season.
“We are very pleased to announce this extension with Jon,” commented club President Nolan Ryan. “Jon and his baseball operations group have done an outstanding job in building an organization that will allow the Rangers to contend for postseason play year in and year out. The efforts in scouting and player development as well as sound decisions on the major league level have put our franchise in a good position. We look forward to Jon leading our baseball operation for many years to come.”
“I am appreciative of the faith that ownership has shown in our baseball leadership group,” commented Daniels, who is in his sixth year as Rangers General Manager. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished to this point, but clearly we have more work to do to reach our ultimate goal. Keeping our baseball operations group together is a huge step towards that end.”
Daniels became the eighth General Manager in club history when he was
appointed to the position on October 4, 2005.
The Rangers remarkable run to the 2010 World Series represented the culmination of a dramatic five-year period in which the club completely overhauled its farm system and developed an organizational philosophy based on strong scouting and player development. That accomplishment resulted in Daniels being selected as Baseball America’s 2010 Major League Executive of the Year. He is just the second Rangers executive to ever earn the award following GM Doug Melvin in 1998.
The Rangers are one of just four clubs, the only American League team, to feature increased win totals in each of the last three years with a pair of second place finishes in 2008 and 2009 before the 2010 A.L. Championship.
Daniels joined the Texas organization in 2002 as a baseball operations assistant. He was promoted to Director of Baseball Operations in October 2003 and Assistant General Manager in July 2004. At the time of his appointment as Rangers’ General Manager, Daniels was 28 years, 41 days old, the youngest general manager in Major League Baseball history.
