Rangers Make 29 Selections on Day 2 of Draft

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers selected 29 players on Day Two of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Rounds 2 through 30 of the draft took place today. The rest of the draft, through round 50, will be completed on Wednesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. CDT.

Below is additional information on the club’s selections today through the 30th round, along with a list of each of the club’s 31 picks through the first two days in this year’s draft. The club will send out a final list at the conclusion of the draft tomorrow.

The club took two players from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas today, right-handed pitchers Connor Sadzeck and Nicholas Sawyer. Sawyer is from Carrollton, a suburb of Dallas.

LHP WILL LAMB (83rd overall) – The 21-year-old left-hander was selected in the 2nd round out of Clemson University, where he was a two-way player for the nationally-ranked Tigers…on the mound, the junior went 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA (14 ER/24.2 IP) and 29 strikeouts against 11 walks in 10 games/4 starts…the left-handed thrower and batter also started 59 games in the field for Clemson, hitting .348 (79-227) with 3 home runs and 39 RBI, while going 13-for-17 on steal attempts…the 6-foot-6, 180-pound Virginia native was the Tigers’ primary centerfielder and did not commit an error in 161 total chances, while recording 8 assists…rated as the 29th-best left-handed pitcher and the #7 prospect in the ACC for the 2011 draft by Baseball America…played for Peninsula in the Coastal Plain League last summer, where he hit .396 with five doubles and eight steals in eight attempts in 12 games and went 4-4 with two saves and a 5.02 ERA in 52.0 innings pitched over 18 appearances/10 starts, as he was tabbed the league’s #3 prospect by

Baseball America…was a first-team all-state outfielder as a senior at York High School in Virginia.

RHP KYLE CASTRO (113th overall) – The 17-year-old right-hander, who will turn 18 in August, was selected in the 3rd round out of Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California…the 6-foot-4, 190-pound hurler went 5-4 with a 3.56 ERA in 16 appearances during his senior season, recording 64 strikeouts against 29 walks over 55.0 innings…earned a 3-1 win in his final start of the 2011 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North playoffs, allowing a single run on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts…played third base for Elk Grove when not on the mound…a versatile two-way starter on the Eagles football team, Castro saw time at defensive back, wide receiver and as a kick/punt returner…was named to the 2010 Sacramento Bee All-Metro Team and California MaxPreps All-State second team after grabbing 12 interceptions last fall.

OF DESMOND HENRY (144th overall) – The right-handed batter and thrower, who turns 18 on July 7, was selected in the fourth round by Texas…the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Henry batted .316 with 3 home runs and 40 stolen bases this spring during his senior season for Centennial High School in Compton, Calif…his high school is five miles from the MLB Urban Youth Academy, where Henry has played games…was rated by Baseball America as the 30th-best prospect in Southern California…in his junior year in 2010, he batted .485 with 5 home runs and 45 stolen bases for Centennial, and he led the Pioneer League in homers, on-base percentage, and stolen bases as a sophomore.

RHP BRANDON WOODRUFF (174th overall) – The 18-year-old out of Wheeler (MS) High School was the Rangers 5th round selection…the 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander was a four-year starter as an outfielder/pitcher at Wheeler High School…compiled a 5-3 record as a junior with 10 saves, a 2.98 earned run average and 100 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched…was selected to the 2010 Under Armor All-America Game on August 14 at Wrigley Field, where he worked 1.0 inning in relief for Team National…at the plate, the left-handed hitter hit a team-best .534, pacing the Eagles with 31 hits, 21 RBI and 16 extra-base hits, including five home runs…during his sophomore campaign in 2009, Woodruff was 3-3 with a 1.20 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 18 innings and hit .565 with 31 RBI, nine home runs…was a four-year letterman and first-team all-division selection in basketball and a three-year letterman and first-team all-division honors and a quarterback…has made a verbal commitment to Mississippi State University.

CF DEREK FISHER (204th overall) – The 17-year-old outfielder, who will turn 18 in August, was selected in the 6th round out of Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania…although he played center field for the Falcons, Baseball America ranked Fisher as the 5th-best corner outfield prospect entering this year’s draft due to his 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame…Fisher was also ranked as the 66th-best position player overall by the same publication…the Pennsylvania Gatorade High School Player of the Year batted .484 (31-64) with 11 home runs and 28 RBI in his senior season, helping Cedar Crest to a Lancaster-Lebanon league championship…has committed to play at the University of Virginia.

C MAX PENTECOST (234th overall) – The 18-year-old right-handed batter was the Rangers’ 7th round selection out of Winder Barrow (Ga.) High School…the 6-foot-2, 191-pound catcher suffered a right elbow injury during a high school game in April, missing the rest of the school’s season…following a junior season in which he batted .468 with 7 homers and 33 RBI, was named First Team All-Region for 8-AAAA in Georgia, and was also named the region’s Hitter of the Year for 2010…was named to Georgia Dugout Club’s Top 100 list after his junior season, an honor given to the best players yet to graduate…was named to region’s second team for his senior year despite the injury…last summer, batted .387 with a home run, 6 doubles, and 13 RBI as a catcher for Junior Team Georgia at the Sunbelt Classic in Oklahoma…his hometown of Winder, Ga., is located northeast of Atlanta, between Atlanta and Athens…is committed to Kennesaw State.

RHP KYLE HENDRICKS (264th overall) – The 21-year-old right-hander was selected in the 8th round out of Dartmouth University, where he went 5-3, 2.47 ERA (17 ER/62.0 IP) with 70 strikeouts and 4 complete games in 9 games/starts as a junior this season…the 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander tied for the Ivy league lead in victories, ranked 2nd in strikeouts, and posted the 3rd-lowest ERA this season to earn first team All-Ivy honors…his 15 strikeouts on March 18 vs. Army was the most by a Big Green pitcher in 39 seasons…garnered All-Ivy Honorable Mention during his sophomore campaign in 2010, finishing 2nd in the conference with 54 strikeouts…was selected in the 39th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim out of Capistrano Valley (CA) High School.

CF RASHAD HARLIN (294th overall) – The 18-year-old outfielder was selected in the 9th round out of Helix High School in La Mesa, California…listed at 6 feet and 190 pounds, the right-handed batter and thrower went 11-for-16 (.688) with 4 doubles, a home run and 5 RBI over the first 7 games of his senior season…Harlin drove the only run of the Highlanders’ 1-0 victory over Steele Canyon High School on April 29, a game played at PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres…is committed to San Diego State.

C JOE MALONEY (324th overall) – The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Maloney was selected in the 10th round by Texas…the switch-hitting catcher batted .308 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 52 games this season for NCAA Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, SC…had 14 doubles, a triple, 121 total bases, a .417 OBP, and .654 slugging pct…the Aston, Penn. Native was named to All-American teams by both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Daktronics, in addition to being named Conference Carolinas Player of the Year…was First Team All-Conference, Daktronics First Team All-Region, Southeast First Team All-Region, NCBWA First Team All-Southeast Region, and a College Baseball Lineup All-Star…was the first player in Limestone College baseball’s 24-year history to win multiple All-American awards in a single season…hit 4 HR in a doubleheader sweep of Belmont Abbey on April 9, a pair of homers in each contest…is a double major in business management and economics at Limestone.
