Rangers place RHP Frank Francisco on 15-day disabled list

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight’s game that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Frank Francisco on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle. To take his place on the active roster, the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Derek Holland from Oklahoma City (AAA). Holland (#45) will be available in the bullpen for tonight’s game against Oakland.

Francisco left last night’s game with the lat injury, also the reason he has appeared in only 3 of the club’s last 15 contests. He has gone 6-4 with a 3.76 ERA (22 ER/52.2 IP) in 56 relief appearances for Texas this season, including a 2.13 ERA (3 ER/12.2 IP) in 13 outings since the All-Star break. His 60 strikeouts rank 4th among American League relievers. The first date he would be eligible to be activated is Sept. 12.

Holland, 23, will be in his third stint with Texas, as he was also with the club May 12-30 and Aug. 18-19. He was on the major league disabled list from May 31-July 31 with left rotator cuff inflammation, a stint during which he also suffered a right knee injury. Holland has gone 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA (14 ER/23.2 IP) over 6 games/5 starts with Texas this season. He last pitched for the Rangers on Aug. 18 at Tampa Bay, taking the loss in an 8-6 defeat (4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R-ER). Holland is 2-1 with a 5.64 ERA (14 ER/22.1 IP) in 13 career relief appearances, including lone relief outing in 2010 on May 26 at Kansas City (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R-ER).

Outside of one rehab appearance with the Arizona League Rangers, Holland has spent the rest of the season with Oklahoma City (AAA), going 6-2 with a 1.87 ERA (13 ER/62.2 IP) in 11 games/starts for the RedHawks. Pacific Coast League batters have hit .216 (50-231) with 18 walks and 51 strikeouts against Holland. His only Triple-A outing since his last start with Texas came Monday at Round Rock, taking a no decision in RedHawks’ 5-4 win (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R-ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR, 113 pitches/72 strikes).

With these moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
