Rangers sweep Red Sox

The Texas Rangers added pitching to their arsenal as they defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Sunday.  The Rangers open the season 3-0 with their first sweep of the year.

Rangers starting pitcher Matt Harrison went 7 innings, only giving up one run on five hits.  Only in the 7th inning did Harrison look vulnerable.  With the bases loaded and 2 out, Rangers manager Ron Washington decided not to go to the bullpen.  Harrison responded to the show of faith by striking out Jacoby Ellsbury to end the inning.  “That was Harry’s game,” Washington said. “I felt the ball was still coming out of his hand well. It was a big-time moment, but that was his moment. We’re in the process of letting these young guys grow up, and he grew up.”

The Texas bats did not go to sleep either, David Murphy, Ian Kinsler, Mike Napoli, and Nelson Cruz all homered.  Kinsler and Cruz became the first teammates in Major League history to hit home runs in each of the first three games of a season.   “It’s pretty special,” Kinsler said. “I don’t know anything about it … I’m not trying to do it, but right now we’re getting lucky … we’re getting good pitches to hit. It’s pretty fun.”

The Rangers don’t get much time to celebrate the sweep, as they start the next series Monday night against Seattle.
