RoughRiders Down Cardinals

FRISCO, TEXAS – The Frisco RoughRiders defeated the Springfield Cardinals 6-1 Wednesday at Dr Pepper Ballpark. In his first start at Dr Pepper Ballpark, Luke Jackson fanned five in five scoreless innings.

With two outs in the first, Lance Berkman walked and Brett Nicholas singled to shallow left. The ‘Riders (20-32, 59-63) then took a 1-0 lead off a single to left by Joe Benson.

Chih-Hsien Chiang led off the fourth with a double slammed hard to right field, and later in the frame, Tomas Telis singled in the run. Ryan Strausborger singled to center, advancing Telis to third, and then Luis Sardinas hit an RBI fielder’s choice extending Frisco’s lead 4-0.

In the fifth, Benson reached first on a fielder’s choice, and Chiang doubled left to drive home the run. The RoughRiders added another run in the sixth by a single RBI by Teodoro Martinez.

The Cardinals (27-25, 60-60) struggled against the five solid innings by Luke Jackson. Springfield didn’t get on the board until the eighth. Cody Stanley reached base on an error by Ryan Rua, and Starlin Rodriguez singled left. A groundout by Adam Melker advanced the runners, and then a groundout by Luis Mateo scored the run, cutting Frisco’s lead 5-1.

Rua led off the eighth with a triple to the right corner, and a groundout by Sardinas scored their

run, giving the RoughRiders a 6-1 lead, which was the final score.

In his first start at Dr Pepper Ballpark, Luke Jackson (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts, allowing four hits and four walks to earn the win. Richard Castillo (7-8) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the loss.

The ‘Riders conclude their season series with the Cardinals Thursday at Dr Pepper Ballpark at 7:05. Tyler Tufts (3-4, 3,28 ERA) will make the start for the RoughRiders against Springfield lefty Tim Cooney(6-7, 4.05 ERA).
