RoughRiders Fall To Corpus Christi

FRISCO, TEXAS – The Frisco RoughRiders were unable to hold on to an early lead as they dropped game one against the Corpus Christi Hooks 8-5 Wednesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

Leading off the first, Teodoro Martinez singled to left and Guilder Rodriguez doubled down the right line. Brett Nicholas then hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Martinez. Later in the frame, Ryan Strausborger knocked an RBI double to left center, putting the ‘Riders (37-27) up 2-0.

The Hooks (39-25) took the lead in the third. Jiovanni Mier reached first on an error by Hanser Alberto, Rene Garcia walked and Domingo Santana walked to load the bases. Erik Castro then knocked a single drive to center field to tie the game at two. Later in the frame, Jonathan Meyer singled to right, bringing home Santana, putting the Hooks up 3-2.

Martinez led off the third with a double to the left corner, and later in the frame, Alex Buchholz knocked a single RBI, tying the game at three.

In the fourth, Mier walked, and then George Springer singled to right and advanced to second on throw by Chih-Hsien Chiang. Garcia then homered to left field to give the Hooks a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Odubel Herrera knocked a triple to center. Zach Zaneski then slammed an RBI double to center. Later, Alberto singled to right to move Zaneski to third, and then Martinez singled right, closing the Hooks’ lead to 6-5.

The Hooks added to their lead in the seventh. Santana hit a leadoff double to the right corner, and then Meyer knocked an RBI single. Later in the inning, Enrique Hernandez hit an

RBI single to left, extending the Corpus Christi’s lead 8-5, which became the final score.

Sergio Escalona (1-1) came on in the fourth and pitched four innings, allowing no runs off four hits and striking out three to earn the victory. Arlett Mavare (1-2) came in relief in the fourth with the game tied, giving up three run on three hits to suffer the loss. Patrick Urkfitz pitched two scoreless innings to be credited with his second save.

The RoughRiders continue their series with the Corpus Christi Hooks Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as Dr Pepper Ballpark. Carlos Pimentel (7-2, 2.96 ERA) makes the start for the ‘Riders and will face Nick Tropeano (1-4, 3.71 ERA) for the Hooks.
