RoughRiders Shut Out In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Frisco RoughRiders split their series in San Antonio, finishing the set with an 8-0 defeat at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on Friday night. With ten games to play in the first half, the RoughRiders now trail Corpus Christi by three games in the Texas League South Division.
The ‘Riders got a baserunner on Matt Andriese in both the first and the second inning but could not strike first. Alex Buchholz struck out to end the first and Odubel Herrera bounced into a 1-6-3 double play to end the second inning. It was one of three double plays turned against the RoughRiders; all of them ended innings, and twice they came with two men on base.
Nick McBride, making his third start of the season, got touched up in the third inning. Johan Limonta led off the frame with an infield single, the first of two in the inning and four against McBride in his four innings of work. Everett Williams brought him home with a one-out double to open the scoring. Jeudy Valdez scored Williams on a fielder’s choice two batters later, and San Antonio (32-27) led 2-0 after two innings.
Frisco (34-26) wasted singles in the third and the fourth and fell behind 3-0 after four innings when Corey Spangenberg collected his first Double-A base hit, an RBI bunt single. That spelled the end of the night for McBride who went four innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He didn’t
walk anyone and struck out five.
A leadoff double in the fifth and a leadoff single in the sixth weren’t enough to ignite the offense who quietly against Andriese and the Missions bullpen. Through seven, the score remained 3-0 Missions.
Justin Miller entered for the RoughRiders in the seventh. The right-hander on a major league rehab assignment made 48 appearances for Frisco in 2011 and had made six this season. For the first time in his ‘Riders career, he did not record an out. He walked Spangenberg, allowed an RBI triple off the bat of Rico Noel, an RBI single from Reymond Fuentes, and finally a run-scoring double from Yeison Asencio before he was lifted from the ballgame. Before it was all over, the Missions tallied five runs on five hits in the seventh inning, and four of the runs went to Miller’s ledger.
The ‘Riders went hitless in the final third of the game and were handed their most lopsided defeat since an 11-0 loss on April 27 against Corpus Christi.
McBride (0-2) suffered the loss, while Andriese (7-1) picked up the win.
The RoughRiders remain on the road, opening up a four-game set in Midland Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Carlos Pimentel (6-2, 3.29 ERA) looks to regain form following his two worst outings of the year going against right-hander Murphy Smith (5-6, 2.24 ERA).
