SMU Golf Heads Into Final Day At C-USA Championships In 1st Place

TEXARKANA, Ark. (SMU) – Bryson Dechambeau matched his first round performance with another four-under round, giving him a one-shot lead on the field for first overall at the Conference USA Championships. SMU is tied for the team lead with Houston at 10-under heading into the decisive final round on Tuesday.

SMU had a seven-stroke edge after round one, but Houston came through with a stellar round two to catch the Mustangs. The two schools currently have a 10-shot lead on UCF, who is in third at even par.

“I knew today would be tough for us, being our first time with a big lead,” Head Coach Josh Gregory said after his team’s even-par score of 288. “We hit away with a decent round and have a great chance to win tomorrow. Houston played great so it should be a fun battle tomorrow. We look forward to the opportunity to win.”

Dechambeau had four birdies during his bogeyless round, including consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth holes.Mario Clemens is currently fifth after going one-over on Monday to finish at three-under overall. Austin Smotherman carded his second round of even play, tallying four birdies and an eagle on the par-five 12th hole.

Tuesday’s final round will tee off at 8 a.m. CDT. The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
