ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The TCU women’s tennis team finished off a sweep Sunday on the Mountain West opening weekend with a 6-1 bettering of Boise State at New Mexico’s Linda Estes Tennis Center.

“I thought Boise State really competed well in the doubles,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova fought off match points to come back to win. It was nice to come back win some points when we were down for a change. That was really big for them. Olivia Smith was really good, she was down in the third and came back to win her match, which is really significant. It’s the kind of match that will give her confidence for the rest of the season. Gabi Barbosa played well and I thought Federica Denti played one of her best matches of the year.”

The No. 39-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 9-5 on the year and 2-0 in the Mountain West with their second-straight triumph. Boise State dropped to 7-8 and 1-1 in the league. TCU has won both of the meetings all-time between it and Boise State.

TCU gutted out the doubles point to open the match with a 1-0 advantage. Olivia Smith and Stefanie Tan took care of business at No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 win over Boise State’s Kaitlyn Brown and Sonia Klamczynska.

After Boise State was able pick up a tight win at No. 1, Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova continued their solid play as partners with a win at the second court. Down in the match, the TCU tandem knocked off Morgan Basil and Sandy Vo, 9-8 (6) to clinch the point.

As singles got underway, the Frogs wasted no time racing out to a 5-0 lead in the match. Gabi Barbosa was first off the court after she steamrolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fiona Mok at No. 6 singles.

Federica Denti made it 3-0 in favor of the Frogs with a 6-1, 6-1 dismantling of Manuela Pietzuch on the fourth singles court. Tan clinched the match for TCU with her seventh-straight win at No. 1 singles, a 6-1, 6-3 win over Klamczynska.

Parajova continued the Frog onslaught when she took down Marlena Pietzuch, 6-2, 7-5, on the No. 2 court. Boise State was able to get on the board with a win at No. 5 singles.

In the only three-set match of the day, Olivia Smith scored the sixth point for TCU. The Bath, England, native, battled from down in the third set to pick up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Boise State’s Vo.

TCU returns to action Wednesday when it hosts crosstown rival SMU for a nonconference tilt. First serve from the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
