TCU Women Beat Oklahoma

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU women’s basketball team closed out its final game in the current Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in style on Saturday evening with a 76-66 victory over Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs improved to 16-13 overall and 7-10 in Big 12 play, while the Sooners dropped to 17-13 on the season and 8-9 in league action.
Sophomore guard Zahna Medley led three Horned Frogs in double figures with 22 points and seven assists, while junior guard Natalie Ventress and sophomore guard Veja Hamilton added 20 and 16 points, respectively.
Ventress, a Fort Worth native, matched a season high with four 3-pointers on six attempts, while Hamilton racked up the most points since Dec. 18 to go with a career-best six steals.
In her final home contest, senior center Latricia Lovings posted six points, seven rebounds, four blocks and four steals in 33 minutes of action.
Hamilton led the Frogs through a slow-paced first half, scoring her eighth point to give
TCU its first lead with 7:28 remaining en route to a 22-19 advantage at the break.
The second half of play couldn’t be more different, as TCU shot a blazing 69 percent (18-of-26) from the field and outscored the Sooners by a 54-47 margin.
Leading the Sooners by a score of 34-28 with 15:35 left to play, Medley dished along the baseline to junior forward Chelsea Prince for a layup and Hamilton knocked down a long jumper to give TCU its first double-digit lead (39-28).
The Frogs kept the pressure on, as Medley found freshman center Klara Bradshaw for the easy layup and followed with a jumper before Ventress knocked down a bucket from long range to put TCU ahead 46-31.
Prince rounded out a 14-3 run with a layup at the 10:23 mark to give the Horned Frogs their largest lead of the game at 48-31.
The Sooners would cut the TCU advantage down to 10 with just over two minutes remaining with a 3-point barrage, but the Frogs were able to get stops and convert from the free-throw line.
In the closing seconds, senior Meagan Henson found fellow senior Alexann Yancey in transition for a fastbreak layup in their final home games to close out the scoring.
The Frogs forced 26 Oklahoma turnovers, its most this season, while snagging 15 steals with six blocks.
TCU shot 50 percent (26-of-52) for the contest as well as 50 percent (6-of-12) from 3-point range while going 18-of-23 (78 percent) from the charity stripe.
Aaryn Ellenberg led the Sooners with 26 points, while Morgan Hook added 17 points.
The Frogs close out the regular season at 7 p.m., on Monday at Kansas State.
