MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The return to national prominence for the North Texas men’s golf program is complete. The No. 27 ranked team in the nation ran away from the field to capture the 2012 Sun Belt Conference title by seven strokes for the school’s 28th conference title and first since 2003. Junior Ty Spinella captured the individual championship with a three-round score of 2-under-par. He was the only player in the field to finish under par.

The win by Spinella gives North Texas back-to-back individual conference champions for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1965-66. Spinella was also named to the All-Sun Belt team for the first time in his career. It is his first career collegiate tournament title.

Spinella, Rodolfo Cazaubon and Carlos Ortiz were named All-Sun Belt Conference, the first time North Texas has had three all-conference honorees since 1996. Cazaubon and Ortiz made their third consecutive All-Sun Belt teams, becoming just the fifth and sixth players to make it to three all-conference teams in school history.

Spinella shot 1-under-par to capture the individual championship by three strokes. Jason Roets shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish the tournament at 4-over-par, which tied for sixth. Cazaubon and Ortiz finished the tournament in a tie for ninth at 5-over-par, with Cazaubon shooting a 74 on the final day and Ortiz posting a 3-over-par performance to finish the tournament. Curtis Donahoe shot a 7-over-par 79 in the final round, and finished the tournament tied for 20th.

North Texas advances to the NCAA Championship for the 30th time in school history. The NCAA Regionals are May 17-19.
