The New York Yankees used a 5-run 3rd inning to beat the Texas Rangers 8-2 Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

Texas starting pitcher Ryan Dempster gave up all 8 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings.  Dempter drops to 6-6 on the season.  Rangers manager Ron Washington credits the Yankees for the offensive outburst, “That team over there, you’ve got to execute. You don’t execute, they make you pay. That’s what they do. They’re a veteran club, they know how to make adjustments and they know how to hit. You’ve got to keep it down.”

The Rangers’ offense had some early success against Yankee pitcher David Phelps, scoring in each of the first two innings.  After Elvis Andrus singled on an infield hit in the first inning, Nelson Cruz brought him home with a soft single to center field.  David Murphy then led off the 2nd inning with a solo home run to put the Rangers up 2-0.

Derek Lowe pitched the final four innings for New York and held the Rangers to just 2 hits while striking out 4.

Texas will try to regroup against New York tonight at Yankee Stadium, where they have lost 9 of their last 10 meetings.  The Rangers hold a 6-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.

Matt Harrison will be on the mound for Texas for the 6:05pm start time.
