Top Seed Withdraws, Oudin Survives at Texas Tennis Open

Top seed Shuai Peng withdrew from the Texas Tennis Open Monday due to a hip injury.  Unseeded wildcard Melanie Oudin, who was scheduled to play the opening round match against Peng, faced lucky loser Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan as a replacement.  Oudin’s luck held out, as she rallied from 5-2 down to win the first set in a tiebreak, followed by Amanmuradova’s retirement due to a lower back injury.  Oudin will next face qualifier Angelique Kerber of Germany who defeated Chanelle Scheepers in 3 sets.

No. 2 seed Dominika Cibulkova had little trouble against Mirjana Lucic.  Cibulkova’s round 2 opponent will be qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko, who dispatched Greta Arn in straight sets.

4th seed Yanina Wickmayer had to retire while up 1-0 in the 3rd set against Sofia Arvidsson.  Sabine Lisicki (5) defeated Sania Mirza in straight sets, as did Shahar Peer (6) over Anastasiya Yakimova.

Britain’s Elena Baltacha defeated Barbora Zahlavoa-Strycova in straight sets.

In double’s action, Alize Cornet and Pauline Parmentier defeated the US team of Irina Falconi and Story Tweedie-Yates.
