No upsets today in the men’s quarterfinals, Roger Federer won in straight sets over Gael Monfils in straight sets, while Juan Martin Del Potro won over Tommy Robredo, also in straight sets. Federer and Del Potro are the highest remaining seeded players in the tournament (nos. 2 and 5). They will play each other in the semifinal round. With the win, Federer extended his own record streak of reaching the semi’s of a Grand Slam event to 20. This will be Del Potro’s first.
In the women’s quarterfinal round, number 2 Serena Williams lost to number 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova in a tightly contested match. This is Serena’s first loss in 19 matches at a major event. In the day’s other quarterfinal match, number 30 Samantha Stosur beat unseeded Sorana Cirstea in straight sets.
