2009 French Open Day 12

Women’s semifinals at Roland Garros. Number 1 Dinara Safina knocked out surprising Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets to continue her assault on her first Grand Slam title.  Safina has received criticism for being number 1 in the world without a Grand Slam title.  This is her best chance to take care of that minor detail.

In the other semifinal, Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Samantha Stosur in 3 sets.  During the match, Kuznetsova called for the trainer to treat her ankle, which she rolled in the quarterfinal match against Serena Williams.

Safina and Kuznetsova, both from Russia, have met 13 times, with Safina winning 8 of those times.
