2009 French Open Day 2

The first round of the 2009 French Open (Roland-Garros) is well underway. Most of the top seeds have played and gone on to the next round. America’s best hope, Texan Andy Roddick, seeded 6th, easily got past his first round opponent, but the draw was good to him.  Roddick should not be pressured until the 4th round.

The real question on the Men’s side is whether or not anyone can beat world number 1, Rafael Nadal.  Nadal has never lost at Roland Garros, and looks to be on his way to a 5th straight title on the French clay.  Number 2 seed Roger Federer will try to avenge his humiliating loss to Nadal in the Finals last year.

The Women’s side is much more questionable.  Number 1 Dinara Safina is playing well, but has yet to win a Grand Slam title.  She looks to be on her way as she cruised through her first round match. Defending champion Ana Ivanovic also moved to the 2nd round, but her play has not been up to last year’s standards. Former number 1’s Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva will try to regain their status and win their first Grand Slam title.  Standing in the way are the Williams sisters.  Venus and Serena are always dominant in the Slams, but Roland-Garros is their worst surface. Maria Sharapova is a question mark, the former #1 has only played one event since coming back from a 10-month layoff with an injury.  She may be just warming up for Wimbledon.
