2009 French Open Day 4

No surprises today, and few upsets.  Nadal, Murray, Simon, and Verdasco all won. Russian heartthrob Marat Safin lost a tight one in possibly his last Roland-Garros tournament. He has announced he will retire after this season.  Now he can go watch little sister Dinara, number 1 in the world, attempt to win her first Grand Slam.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova shocked the 11th seed Nadia Petrova in a tiebreak victory. Sharapova shows no sign of trouble with her surgically repaired shoulder that has kept her out of tennis for 10 months.  Just one year ago she was number 1 in the world, now it looks as if she may be able to regain her title after all.

Other women’s winners today: Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic, Victoria Azarenka, and Alize Cornet.
