2009 US Open Women’s Final

The Women’s Final took center stage at the US Open.  After the theatrics of the semi-final match, it was pleasant to have 2 players who are cordial and smiling.

The #9 seed, Caroline Wosniacki, a 19 year old from Denmark was playing in her 1st Grand Slam final. Her opponent, unseeded Kim Clijsters from Belgium, is coming out of a 2 year retirement. She last played in the US Open in 2005, when she won the event.

The 1st set was a battle, with both players hammering the ball in long rallies before Clijsters finally came out on top 7-5.

In the 2nd set, it appeared that Wozniacki just ran out of steam as Clijsters kept the pressure on.  Clijsters wins her 2nd US Open title, 7-5, 6-3.

The men were in action as well, with the semifinal round featuring #1 Roger Federer against #4 Novak Djokovic and #3 Rafael Nadal versus #6 Juan Martin Del Potro.

In the 1st match, Del Potro completely dominated Nadal, winning 6-2,6-2,6-2. It was the worst defeat for Nadal in his Grand Slam career.  Del Potro will be making his 1st ever Grand Slam final.

Roger Federer continued to show why he is called the greatest ever.  Federer won his 40th consecutive US Open match, beating Djokovic in straight sets.  Djokovic played well, hitting shots that would have won most matches, only to have Federer return them with a winner of his own. Even Djokovic looked to be in awe after some of the points, highlighted by a Federer between-the-legs winner on the next to last point. Feder has now made it to 17 of the last 18 Grand Slam finals.

In other US Open news, Serena Williams has been fined $10,500 for her outburst during the semifinal match against Clijsters.
