2009 Wimbledon Day 2

Most of the draw today went as expected on both the men’s and women’s side.  Venus Williams rolled through her opening match, and Andy Roddick served his way into the second round. Number 1 seeded Dinara Safina won, though she complained of knee problems. Serbian superstars Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic also both won their opening matches.

Perhaps the most disappointing match of the day was 2-time Grand Slam winning Marat Safin losing to American qualifier Jesse Levine.  Safin was playing his final time at Wimbledon as he plans to retire at the end of the year. Will he stick around to watch little sister Dinara?

Much of the talk of the day was the slippery surface.  Williams, Roddick, and even a ball boy took a fall today. In yesterday’s opening rounds, S. Belmond Beltrame retired due to injury after falling in her match against Victoria Azarenka.

Perhaps the biggest cheers of the day went to Andy Murray, Great Britain’s best chance for a home-court Slam champion in decades.

The biggest complaint of the tournament so far has been from Serena Williams, who is not happy with a “No eating in the locker room” rule.
