2009 Wimbledon Day 5

The biggest names keep winning – Federer, Serena, Djokovic, Dementieva.  But no. 9 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s campaign on the grass courts is over. Ivo Karlovic served 46 aces to beat Tsonga in 4 sets, 3 of them going to tiebreakers.  The 6’10” Karlovic goes into the round of 16 for only the second time in his career.

Roger Federer dropped a set for the first time this tournament while winning over Philipp Kohlschreiber in 4 sets. Federer will meet Robin Soderling in the next round for a repeat of the French Open final.

Serena Williams had little trouble with Roberta Vinci, serving 10 aces in her straight set victory. No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva had even less trouble in her victory over Regina Kulikova.

In other women’s action, no. 8 Victoria Azarenka won over Sirana Cirstea and no. 10 Nadia Petrova ended Gisela Dulko’s surprising run.

Number 4 Novak Djokovic handled American Mardy Fish in straight sets while number 7 Fernando Verdasco had a little more difficulty in his win over Albert Montanes.
