2009 Wimbledon Day 6

Two of the top seeds in the Women’s event were ousted today at Wimbledon.  Number 5 and reigning French Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova lost in straight sets to unseeded Sabine Lisicki.   No. 6 Jelena Jankovic lost a dramatic match to American qualifier Melanie Oudin. The former world number 1 Jankovic won the first set in a tie break, but then called for a doctor and trainer. After a long delay, she returned to the court, but was visibly not playing her usual game. Oudin took advantage of it, playing superbly in her first match against a top-10 player.

Number 1 seed Dinara Safina overcame spirited play by Kirsten Flipkens to win in straight sets and move into the 4th round.

Venus William, seeded no. 3, got revenge against Carla Suarez-Navarro, who had knocked her out of the Australian Open earlier this year. Venus displayed the power and control that have taken her to 5 previous Wimbledon titles.

Number 9 Caroline Wosniacki also advanced to the round of 16 with a straight set win over Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Former number 1, now 13th seed Ana Ivanovic played some of her best tennis of the year in her victory over no. 18 Samantha Stosur.

11th seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced with a win over no. 19 Na Li of China.

On the men’s side, number 3 Andy Murray continued his home-country’s hopes for a title by dominating Victor Troiki.

American Andy Roddick, seeded 6, won in 4 sets over no.26 Jurgen Melzer. Number 8 Gilles Simon beat no. 31 Victor Hanescu in straight sets.

In the men’s biggest upset of the day, no. 10 Fernando Gonzalez lost to unseeded Juan Carlos Ferrero. Numbers 11 and 12 did not fare any better as no. 11 Marin Cilic lost to no. 24 Tommy Haas and no. 12 Nikolay Davydenko lost to no. 20 Tomas Berdych.
