2009 Wimbledon Day 7

For my money, this is the best day of Wimbledon, the top 16 men and top 16 women all play on this day. The action was worth the buildup.

For the men, Roger Federer had to play a repeat of the French Open final against Robin Soderling.  Soderling had joked that no one could beat him 11 times in a row.   Unfortunately for him, Federer did just that. In straight sets, two of them in tie-breaks.

American Andy Roddick also won in straight sets over Tomas Berdych, as did Novak Djokovic over Dudi Sela and Tommy Haas over Igor Andreev.

Having a bit more difficult time was unseeded Lleyton Hewitt, who took 5 sets to win over number 23 Radek Stepanek.  Hewitt, former world no. 1 and Wimbledon champion, is having his best run of the year.

There were two big upsets on the men’s side, with unseeded Juan Carlos Ferrero beating no. 8 Gilles Simon in straight sets and no. 22 Ivo Karlovic ousting no. 7 Fernando Verdasco in 4.

The dramatic match of the day was a 4-hour duel between Stanislas Wawrinka (19) and no. 3 Andy Murray. In the closed roof Centre Court, Wawrinka pushed Murray to the edge before finally succumbing in the 5th set.

The women’s side was also full of action, as no. 1 seed Dinara Safina lost the opening set to no. 17 Amelie Mauresmo before coming back and winning in 3.

No. 2 Serena Williams had little trouble with Daniela Hantuchova as did no. 4 Elena Dementieva with Elena Vesnina.

No. 11 Agnieszka Radwanska put an end to unseeded American teenager Melanie Oudin’s dream tournament.

In a very entertaining match, no. 8 Victoria Azarenka outlasted no. 10 Nadia Petrova.

Upsets of the day included unseeded Sabine Lisicki winning over no. 9 Caroline Wozniacki and unseeded Francesca Schiavone over no. 26 Virginie Razzano.

A dramatic but surprising match was no. 3 seed Venus Williams against Ana Ivanovic.  Williams easily took the first set and the first game of the second when Ivanovic pulled a muscle while serving an ace.  Ivanovic was unable to continue and left the court in tears.

The women’s quarterfinals take place on Tuesday, while the men get a day off.
