2009 Wimbledon Women’s Final

The Battle of the Williams Sisters continued in the Wimbledon final, as Venus and Serena continued their domination of the event. Venus, defending champion and 5-time winner has dominated the tournament thus far. Little sister Serena, a 2-time Wimbledon champion herself, has had the more difficult path to the championship.  This is the 21st time the sisters have played in a professional match, with each winning 10 times going into this final.

The first set was all about serves, as each player easily held serve and the set goes to a tiebreak, eventually won by Serena.

In the second set, Venus seemed to be out of sorts, not doing anything really well other than serving. Eventually, she lost that, too, as Serena gets the crucial break and then goes on to close out the victory. All day Serena was the more mobile player, appearing to have much more desire for victory than her sister.

It is Serena’s 3rd Wimbledon victory.  It has been 6 years since her last title at the All England Club.  It is her 3rd Grand Slam title in the last year, and 11th overall.
