2010 Australian Open Day 7

US Open Champion Juan Martin Del Potro will not repeat as a Grand Slam winner this time. Del Potro, the 4th seed, was upset in a 5-set thriller by no. 14 Marin Cilic.  In this battle of giants (both players are 6’6”), Cilic outlasted DelPo and will advance to the quarterfinal round.

No. 2 Rafael Nadal overcame the 6’10” Ivo Karlovic and his giant serve.  Karlovic served up 28 aces, but Nadal’s ground game came out on top after 4 sets.

Andy Murray (5) struggled for a set before figuring out the American giant, 6’9” John Isner (33).  Murray went on to win in straight sets with the help of some incredible shots made while on the run.

The remaining American man, no. 7 Andy Roddick, had his hands full with no. 11 Fernando Gonzalez.  Roddick eventually prevailed in 5 sets.

For the women, Justine Henin continued her comeback with a victory over Yanina Wickmayer.  Henin struggled, but showed the grit that took her to 7 Grand Slam titles.

No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Nadia Petrova (19), who is having a great tournament, already with a victory over Kim Clijsters.

Jie Zheng put an end to the title run by Alona Bondarenko (31).

In the surprise move of the day, Dinara Safina (2) retired in the first set of her match against Maria Kirilenko due to a back injury. It is Kirilenko’s first time as a Grand Slam quarterfinalist.
