2010 Australian Open Day 9

It was a good day for the underdog in the quarterfinal round.  3 of the 4 matches were upsets.

Men’s no. 2 Rafael Nadal retired while trailing in the 3rd set against no. 5 Andy Murray.  Nadal’s knee was once again a problem. Knee injuries sidelined Nadal for much of last season, including the Wimbledon Championships.

Andy Roddick (7) was upset by Marin Cilic (14) after coming from 2 sets down to force a 5th and deciding set.  Cilic advances to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

For the women, Justine Henin continued her amazing return to the game, defeating Nadia Petrova (19) in straight sets.

Two unseeded women battled, with Jie Zheng overpowering Maria Kirilenko to advance to her first Grand Slam semi.
