2010 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Round 2

More low scores were made during Round 2 of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial today, but the news was all about one that wasn’t.  Former Colonial champ and marquee player Phil Mickelson did not make the cut.  Mickelson shot 3-over 73 to go with his 71 in Round 1 to miss his first cut since the 2009 Houston Open, over a year ago.  Mickelson took the blame for his play, “I played terrible. I don’t know what to say.  The course was in great shape, there was no wind and there were a lot of birdies out there, and I just played terrible.”

Not playing terrible was Bryce Molder, who shot an 8-under par 62 to take a one stroke lead over Jason Bohn.  The 62 is the lowest round of Molders career.

Bohn shot a 5-under 65 to go with his opening day 63.  He talked about the great conditions on the course, “It was definately out there for a take.  With no wind, the greens have to be a little bit softer, or they are going to die in this heat.  It’s very accessible for sure.”

Brian Davis is tied for 3rd after a score of 65 today, for a -11 overall.  “This course is one of those courses if you can hit a lot of fairways, you can shoot the pins and you can make some birdies, especially with the greens a bit soft at the moment,” commented Davis.  “But no doubt the tournament will firm them up over the weekend and make it a lot tougher.”

Kris Blanks is also at -11 for the event, he is bogey-free through 36 holes.

Playing for the 27th time at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, United States Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin shot a 2nd-round 6-under par 64 to move to 9-under for the tournament.  Pavin, who won this event in 1985 and 1996, has played the event every year dating back to his first Crowne Plaza Invitational in 1984.  He is looking for his first top-10 finish here at Colonial Country Club since a tie for 8th in 2001.  Pavin skipped the Senior PGA to play here, “I’ve played here 26 straight years.  This is the 27th.  It’s a course I like.  I’ve played well on it.  It would be pretty hard to skip.  It was a tough choice, but ultimately it came down to the fact that I love Colonial.  I don’t have to try to hit shots that I’m not used to hitting, and it’s very comfortable for me.

Ben Crane got a hole-in-one on the par-3 13th hole using an 8-iron from 160 yards.  It is the 3rd consecutive year that a hole-in-one has occured on the 13th hole.
